Each contestant will perform a 2-4 minute monologue of his or her choosing from a play or written work of their choice. The selection can be a written speech or dialogue taken from one character within a scene, but should include a point-of-entry into the character and a personal connection to the selected material.
Contestants will be judged by a panel of Austin-area theatre professionals and educators on the basis of preparedness, understanding of the text, emotional connection to the material, and commitment to the performance. High school competitors are people who have completed an academic year between grades 9 – 12 and certain recent graduates. Young adult competitors may include recent high school grads as long as they are no younger than 18 OR older than 23 by August 19, 2018.
Five students from each category will be selected to participate in the final round. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 competitors in each category:
Winners will be announced the evening of September 1, 2019 during the 7th Annual Capital City Black Film Festival Awards reception. The first place finishers will perform their monologue on stage during the Awards event.
